Before Marvel debuted its team of misfits lead by a professor in a wheelchair, DC introduced their team of misfits lead by a wheelchair-bound “saviour.” The year was 1963, and as comic book artists of the time tended to work for both of these competitors, speculation is that one of them tipped off Stan Lee at Marvel about a series being developed at DC.

Stan Lee later went on to create the X-Men, however it was Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani who created Doom Patrol a few months earlier for DC. Drake later went on to say he figures the coincidence was far less nefarious, essentially invoking the “great minds think alike” rationale. And there may be some truth in that. We’ll likely never know.

Both the X-Men and Doom Patrol suffered their ups and downs, though once the X-Men took off, they were able to attain a level of fandom that’s allowed Marvel to publish a number of X-titles every month. Meanwhile, Doom Patrol has struggled, to the point of having the entire team killed off in their first run.

So when DC announced a live-action series, many were surprised. We’d seen them in the Titans series briefly, and their chemistry was undeniable even in just those few scenes, however could they carry a series?

The answer, clearly, is yes.
