Episode 57: I Am Mother

After an apocalypse wipes out the majority of the human population, an android named “Mother” is responsible for developing what it perceives to be a better human being. We watch as she raises “Daughter” from an embryo—one of many which are stored in this heavily secured bunker.

The first part of the film allows us to see Mother care for Daughter, first as an infant, then curious toddler, and eventually as an intelligent, skilled, caring teenager. Throughout all of this time, Daughter is lead to believe the outside world is contaminated and that she would not be able to survive. Yet one day, she finds a mouse inside the base, and just like Daughter, we as an audience, begin to question Mother’s intentions.

Eventually, a wounded woman, credited only as “Woman” (and played brilliantly by Hilary Swank), appears to throw a proverbial wrench in Mother’s carefully constructed plans for Daughter.

I feel that I Am Mother is an under-appreciated film, and I blame critics for this. Their reviews have done nothing to help explain the film in such a way that you can appreciate the clever breadcrumbs, fun action scenes, and intelligent reveals. Luckily, if comments are to be believed, most audience members have come to these conclusions on their own.
