See You Yesterday is an interesting take on the time travel film trope. By grounding the film in a reality that is painstakingly, brutally all too real, it helps us, as the viewers, invest ourselves in the story and characters.
Claudette ‘CJ’ Walker and her best friend Sebastian are the next generation of time travellers to grace the screen, however unlike many who have come before, their reason for doing so is far more personal. Perhaps not initially, though absolutely as the story progresses.
You would think that a film dealing with the inherent silliness of time travel, as well as the horrific nature of police brutality, would be incredibly disjointed and hard to follow. However that’s simply not the case. With every jump, you find yourself routing for CJ.
We may not all be able to relate to some of what she goes through–although sadly, many can–but her actions force us to dig deep into our own morals and beliefs, and ask, “Would I go back to save someone I love?”
I know I would.
