There was a time when children weren’t so precious that they couldn’t have the shit scared out of them in films. I remember watching The Dark Crystal when it originally released, and many of the images therein were burned into my psyche from then on. I can only imagine if I’d been even younger when I’d seen it, how much more powerful that link to the film would be.
Jim Henson and Frank Oz created something special in 1982 with the Gelfling, Mystics, Skeksis, and the balance of good and evil. It’s a story that feels just as impactful today as it did decades ago, and the film remains spectacularly beautiful.
With the release of the new Netflix series, it seemed like a good time to see how well this film has held up, and without spoiling much, it certainly does.
Enjoy.
