With X-Men: Days of Future Past coming soon, Vince and I thought we’d take this time to get folks caught up with the X-Men movies so far. Most folks know that the leather-clad mutants are based on a comic book series of the same name, however there still exists many who’ve not yet read any of these.
The series started in 1963 with the original team consisting of Professor Xavier, Cyclops, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Beast, Iceman and Angel. Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler and others weren’t brought into the series until 1975.
The series has been important in comics for a very long time, and most people would agree that’s because of the social implications which mirror our own in real life (prejudice being the most obvious).
These are issues which we have seen in all of the X-Men movies as well, though sadly, they’ve not always been handled as effectively. Still, the movies aren’t without their moments. The first two X-Men films, as well as X-Men: First Class are actually all fairly well reviewed. While there are aspects of each which Vince and I both abhorred, there were also moments which impressed the hell out of us.
And then there’s X-Men: The Last Stand and the two Wolverine solo movies, for which there is no answer but to facepalm and groan whenever anyone brings them up.
This week, in preparation for X-Men: Days of Future Past, Vince and I discuss:
– X-Men
– X2: X-Men United
– X-Men: The Last Stand
– X-Men Origins: Wolverine
– X-Men: First Class
– The Wolverine
From atrocious accents to ridiculous continuity problem, we tackle it all.
As promised, here are some links from our Comic Book Informer podcast which we highly recommend for folks to get acquainted with some of the stories within the comics books which pertain to these movies.
– X-Men: Days of Future Past episode
– Wolverine mini-series episode
Also, in reference to Vince’s “Old Man Logan” comment:
Let us know your favorite moments in the X-Men movie franchise so far, or which was for you, the most groan-inducing cliche or continuity mess.
Join us next episode, as we’ll have seen and be discussing X-Men: Days of Future Past.
P.S. I know I said at the start of the episode that we’d also be discussing X-Men: Days of Future Past, in terms of what the story is, however there simply wasn’t enough time, and we’d already done this on an episode of Comic Book Informer.
