Episode 04: Anime Grab-bag #1

POSTER_AGB01Vince and I love talking about anime, whether we agree or not is irrelevant. What matters is that we are passionate about that which we love and hate. There’s very little middle ground.

On this episode of Popcorn Ronin, we started with Attack on Titan, which we each have strong feelings about. I was surprised to hear Vince’s thoughts on the main cast of characters. While he didn’t like them, I found them engaging, particularly fan-favorite Mikasa.

From there, we switched it up, each discussing series which matter to us (and why).

POSTER_AGB02Vince, being the massive mech/robot nerd, covered:

  • Gatchaman CROWDS
  • Kill la Kill
  • Valvrave the Liberator (Kakumeiki Valvrave)
  • Gundam Build Fighters

Give him a few spinning gears and he’s willing to forgive damn near anything in a series, as became apparent during our discussion. Still, I was relieved to hear his thoughts on Kill la Kill, a series that is getting way too much press lately, in our opinion.

Meanhile I chose to talk about:

POSTER_AGB03

  • Gosick
  • My Teenage Romantic Comedy SNAFU
  • Sword Art Online
  • Full Metal Alchemist

For me, story is of the utmost importance. Story and characters. I need to feel for these people, and the series I chose embody that. I strongly suggest all of these series, though have been advising people to only watch the first season of Sword Art Online. The second season had some very important character development, however the writing took a dramatic turn and included far too much sleaze which simply did not belong in the series.

So there’s our first grab-bag. We hope you enjoyed the episode. Give us your thoughts on these and other series in the comments section.
